How to repair tears and holes on leather

Minor damages can easily be repaired with Liquid Leather, an adhesive which can be used for repairing small holes, tears, deeper scratches and cracks. Liquid Leather has filling and adhesive properties and remains soft and flexible after drying.

Liquid Leather is only recommended for damage where a filling is necessary. Scratches and wear situated only in the colour surface do not require a treatment with Liquid Leather. In such cases it is sufficient to smooth the surface with the Sanding Pad and to refresh the colour with Leather Fresh.

Consideraciones:

Leather cleaning

In the case of dirt or stains, the leather should be treated with our ‘SOFT’ or ‘STRONG’ Leather Cleaner, depending on the level or extension of the stain. The application of Leather Cleaner will avoid dirt latch on to the surface, and remove any residues left by the use of other product treatments in the past. We recommend to use the Cleaning Brush during the cleaning process in order to remove dirt deposited on the structure of the leather.

Remove greasy dirt

Degrease the surface with Leather Cleaning Spirit, in order to remove any greasy residues in the areas to be treated to refresh the leather dye. These will facilitate adhesion of the leather dye. The Leather Cleaner is very effective to remove common dirt but does not remove oil, wax or silicone residues left on the leather surface. These substances minimize the effectiveness of Leather Fresh and Liquid Leather.

Before applying the color/dye, it is necessary to sand rough areas and scratches (if any) using the Leather Sanding Pad.

Apply Liquid Leather

Liquid Leather has a removable cap. Remove the cap and fill the damaged areas. Evenly spread the Liquid Leather with a Spatula. Let the repair dry according to the amount used – about 1-2 hours. Repeat the procedure until the repaired area is as full and smooth as possible.

Smooth the surface of the repair

In case of larger damage it’s not always possible to smooth the surface evenly just by using the Spatula. Such areas have to be reworked. Liquid Leather cannot be sanded dry. This would damage the repair.

In such cases the GLD Pen can be used to smooth the repair. The GLD Solvent slightly dissolves the surface of the Liquid Leather and a better smoothing can be achieved.

Open the lid of the GLD Pen and press down the felt tip several times until it is moistened. If the felt tip gets too moist, remove the excess quantity by cleaning it with a cloth. Smooth the repair area carefully with the moistened felt tip. When the repair area is wet with GLD, an additional treatment with the Sanding Pad can be done to smooth the repair area. Always work with little GLD to prevent the repair area from becoming too dissolved. Using GLD, a repair can be adjusted as often as desired until improvement is no longer possible.

Professionals can repair the graining on a work area using a Repair Grain Set. Usually, old leathers are smooth and do not need a new graining.

The tip of the GLD Pen can be removed and reversed when worn. Especially when working on a new colour, it is necessary to change or turn around the felt tip.

Repair a hole with missing leather

Holes should be reinforced before repairing by gluing a thin piece of cloth underneath the hole with Leather Glue. Cut out a small piece of the original leather from a hidden area and adjust its shape according to the hole. Use the Leather Glue to glue it onto the piece of Leather Repair Cloth and the edges of the hole. Close the visible rims with Liquid Leather.

Repair a tear in the leather

Leathers with big tears must first be examined in order to decide whether it would be better to replace the weak leather. Especially long tears in old and rough leathers or in areas of high use are often irreparable or not durable enough after a repair. We recommend the repair of tears only on stable leathers and only if the tear is no larger than a few centimeters.

Procedure: Minor tears which are not under tension should be provisionally glued with Leather Glue from edge to edge. Then close the tear with Liquid Leather as explained.

Tears under high tension should be backed by thin cloth like Leather Repair Cloth. In the case of very large tears and/or very rough leathers it is recommended to sew the leather with a thin but strong thread. Place a seam every 3-4 centimetres with the starting knot on the leather's reverse. Cover the thread with Liquid Leather.

If the leather is not too rough, drill a small hole to the right and the left of the tear (approximately 2-3 millimetres) and sew with a round needle. Lay the knot underneath and pull the tear together. Tears in areas of frequent use should always be replaced by new leather when they are too large; the same is true for weak or hardened leathers.
